On 22nd June 1948, the Empire Windrush, carrying 492 Caribbean migrants docked in Tilbury, Essex. The ship and its passengers have a symbolic status as the start of the Windrush Generation. In 2021, 73 years later, I decided to undertake a self-initiated project to explore their experiences living in the UK and raise awareness of their contribution to society.
To achieve this, I created a series of posters using quotes from interviews I conducted with Windrush Veterans. The quotes created a narrative about their experiences, starting from when they left the Caribbean and arrived in the UK. They spoke about adapting to change, facing hardship, and building a life in their new home.
My posters were carefully designed to highlight their unique experiences by using colour, imagery, and texture to emphasise the emotional impact of their stories. I also created print and digital exhibition assets, including a logo, private view invitations, and a poster to promote the exhibition.
